What do I actually get for free?

Is there a watermark?

On free videos, yes — a small “Shot with Mochi” badge in the bottom corner. Nowhere else: screenshots have never had one and never will. It's in the corner rather than across the middle because the free recorder is meant to be used on real work, and you can see it in the editor the whole time you're cutting, so it's never something you discover after the fact. Pro takes it off.

Why is the recorder free at all, if it's the thing you charge for?

Because the good part can't be explained in a list. Mochi zooms in on what you were doing by following your typing as well as your clicking, so it still shows the right thing while you're filling in a form and the mouse isn't moving. Two minutes is enough to watch that happen on your own work, and you can cut it up properly while you're there. Paying takes the ceiling off — record as long as you like, drop the badge, add your webcam and other clips, put words and shapes on screen, and save it at 4K and 60fps.

Isn't $99 a lot for a Mac utility?

It's less than the screen recorder on its own. As of August 2026, Raycast Pro is $96 a year, Screen Studio is $108 a year, Grammarly Pro is $144 a year, and CleanShot X is $29 up front plus $19 a year — $377 in your first year, and that's only four of the seven things Mochi does. Mochi is $99 for all seven, and if you only want the free half, that stays free.

Why is there no one-time purchase?

Because the recording half needs real work every year. Every new version of macOS changes how recording, cameras and permissions behave, and a recorder nobody looks after is one that breaks every September. Charging once for work that never stops is a promise we'd end up breaking — Screen Studio dropped its own $229 lifetime price for the same reason. If a year feels like too much of a commitment, pay by the month.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes — $12 a month, cancel whenever you like. Paying for the year is about a third cheaper at $99. If you only need it for one video, one month is a perfectly sensible way to buy it, and we'd rather you did that than not use it at all.

Can I try it first?

Two weeks of everything, no card. Record something you'd actually post, edit it, save it, and judge how it looks — that's a fairer test than any list of features, including this one. Do nothing at the end and it quietly goes back to the free version.

What happens if I stop paying?

It goes back to the free version. Finding things, everything you've copied, five text shortcuts, screenshots and two-minute recordings all carry on exactly as before — free isn't a crippled version, it's most of the app. Videos you already made stay on your Mac as ordinary files that open in anything, with no badge added to them after the fact. Snippets past the fifth keep expanding, and screenshots already taken aren't deleted — the shelf just winds down as you take new ones.

Is there a student discount?

Can I buy several for my team?

Yes, and there's no separate business plan to work out — five or more get 20% off on one invoice, billed however your finance people prefer. Email us with a number. Everyone gets exactly the same thing an individual gets.

Can I use it on my laptop and my desktop?

Yes — it covers three Macs. It's meant for one person's machines rather than you and a colleague, and you can move it to a different Mac from your account page whenever you like.

Does the writing help cost extra?

No. It's included, there's no usage charge, and there's nothing to set up — no API key to create, no account to open with anyone else, no model to choose. You press the keys and it works. One difference worth knowing about, if you're replacing a writing assistant: Mochi fixes or translates what you've highlighted when you press the keys, rather than watching everything you type. Nothing sits between you and your keyboard.
