The short answer. CleanShot X is the more complete screenshot tool and it is cheap. Mochi's screenshots are free, its annotations stay editable, and the same hotkey set also records your screen and searches your Mac.
Where CleanShot X is the better buy
- Scrolling capture, which Mochi does not do at all.
- CleanShot Cloud — upload and get a link back, which is a workflow people build their whole day around.
- A one-time price. $29 with optional updates is the friendliest pricing model on this page, and if paying yearly is the thing you object to, theirs is the honest answer.

Where Mochi is different
- Screenshots and annotation are free, with no watermark and no account.
- Annotations stay objects. Reopen a capture from history and every arrow, box and blur is still editable — not flattened into the image.
- The same capture hotkeys sit beside a screen recorder, a launcher, clipboard history and snippets.
- Nothing is uploaded anywhere. There is no cloud service, which is a feature or a missing feature depending entirely on how you work.

Questions
- Is Mochi a full CleanShot X replacement?
- No — no scrolling capture and no cloud upload. If you rely on either, keep CleanShot X. If you mainly grab a region, mark it up and paste it somewhere, Mochi does that for free and keeps the marks editable.
- Why would I pay yearly when CleanShot X is $29?
- You would not, for screenshots alone. Mochi's screenshots are free. The subscription is for the recorder and the writing tools, and it exists because a screen recorder needs repair every September when macOS changes how capture behaves.
