Mochi vs Loom
The tool that made “just send a Loom” a thing people say: record, and a link is on your clipboard before you have stopped talking, with a library, comments and analytics behind it.
The short answer. These are not the same tool. Loom uploads and hands you a link, with a searchable team library behind it; Mochi makes a file on your Mac and uploads nothing, ever. If sharing is the point, buy Loom. If the video itself is the point, Mochi edits it better and costs less.
Where Loom is the better buy
- A link, instantly, and hosting behind it. That is the entire product and Mochi has none of it — no upload, no page, no player.
- A team library with search, comments, reactions and viewer analytics. Async standups and code review run on exactly this.
- It runs on Windows, in a browser and on a phone. Mochi is macOS only, and always will be.
- SSO, admin controls and retention policy. If your company bought Loom, Mochi is not a swap and should not be pitched as one.
Loom costs $18 per user per month on Business, less on annual billing. The free tier holds 25 videos, capped at five minutes each.
Where Mochi is different
- The recording is a file you own rather than a page on somebody's server that stops resolving when the plan lapses.
- Automatic zoom that follows typing as well as clicks — a click-only planner is blind to somebody filling in a form, which is when the pointer sits still and the interesting thing happens.
- A real timeline: cuts, reordering, zooms you can aim by hand, captions, shapes, imported clips and an audio mix.
- Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. The recorder half of Mochi touches no network at all.
- The free tier records as many videos as you like, with the editor and the cutting included — two minutes each rather than five, and no cap on how many.

That is four of the eight things Mochi does. Mochi Pro is $99 a year on 3 Macs, or $12 a month. Most of it — including a two-minute recorder with the editor and cutting — is free forever.
Questions
- Is Mochi a Loom replacement?
- Only if what you wanted from Loom was the recording. There is no link, no hosting, no team library and no viewer analytics, and none of that is planned. If your team lives in a Loom library, keep it — this is the wrong page for you.
- How do I share a Mochi recording, then?
- You export a file and send it the way you send files. That is a real downgrade from a link and it is worth saying plainly. It is also the reason nothing you record has to pass through anybody's server, which for a recording of an internal tool or a customer's data is sometimes the only acceptable answer.
