Installing Mochi

2 min read

Mochi runs from the menu bar and works through keyboard shortcuts. There is no account to create and nothing to set up. Install it, press Space, and it is ready to use.

What you need

macOS14 Sonoma or later
MacApple silicon
Disk spaceUnder 100 MB for the app. Recordings need more.
AccountNone. The free version needs no licence key.

Install Mochi

  1. Download the disk image

Use the Download button on the home page. You will get a file called Mochi.dmg. Double-click it to open it.

  2. Drag Mochi into your Applications folder

Install it in Applications rather than running it from Downloads. Apps left in the Downloads folder stay quarantined by macOS and cannot update themselves properly.

  3. Open Mochi

Double-click it in Applications. The first launch takes a few seconds longer while macOS checks the app signature.

  4. Complete the setup screens

You will see a welcome screen, the permission requests, a short tour, and a summary. It takes about three minutes. You can skip any part of it.

Start Mochi automatically

Turn on Settings > General > Launch at login so Mochi starts with your Mac.

Where Mochi stores your files

All of these are ordinary folders on your Mac. You can open them in Finder.

Clipboard history, snippets, settingsApp preferences on this Mac

Each recording is stored as a folder rather than a single file. It contains the screen video, the camera video if you used one, a thumbnail, and a file holding your edits. The video files are standard QuickTime movies and open in any video player.

Uninstall Mochi

  1. Quit Mochi

Click the menu bar icon and choose Quit.

  2. Move the app to the Trash

Drag Mochi from your Applications folder to the Trash. There is no uninstaller to run.

  3. Remove leftover files, if you want to

Delete ~/Library/Application Support/Mochi/. Check the Recordings folder inside it first, because your recordings are stored there. You can also switch Mochi off in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

If macOS says the app is damaged

This message usually means the download was interrupted, or macOS could not reach Apple to verify the app. Delete the file and download it again on a normal connection.
